Many Local Authorities have increased their salt stockholding to ensure they are not caught out again by prolonged bad weather. However, larger stockpiles can bring new hazards.
Authorities should re-examine their working practices on handling salt stockpiles and ensure that appropriate risk assessment has been completed. This should include assessment of safety in working with larger and higher stockpiles.
